On November 20, 2025, Business Turku’s Energiaverkosto (Energy Network) organized a full-day visit to the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant. The trip opened our eyes to how innovative the nuclear industry in Finland truly is.
Early in the morning, a busload of participants departed from Turku towards Olkiluoto. We were welcomed by Senior Vice President of Safety and Security Veli-Pekka Nurmi, who gave an expert and engaging presentation on Olkiluoto’s safety practices, history, and future. After the presentation, we enjoyed lunch at the Olkiluoto cafeteria, and then our group had the chance to see the power plant buildings from the outside on the way to the waste disposal facility.

At the disposal facility, we explored the silos for intermediate and low-level waste. Some participants received dosimeters to monitor radiation levels in the area. Upon leaving, everyone was checked with a device that indicated any possible contamination.

To wrap up the day, we learned more about Olkiluoto’s R&D activities and could ask some challenging questions. It was fascinating to hear how the nuclear industry is being developed in innovative ways, for example, 3D printing could have its part in solving spare part challenges in the future.

Before heading back to Turku, we made a quick stop at the Olkiluoto Visitor Center’s Electricity from Uranium science exhibition. The exhibition was created in collaboration with Heureka, which was evident in its interactive and inspiring content.
Tip: The exhibition is open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM. There is also a nature trail starting from the Visitor Center where you can explore Olkiluoto’s unique environment. Highly recommended!
A big thank you to Business Turku for organizing the visit and to the TVO team at Olkiluoto!
